A Daily Practice - Writing Raven Dancer

Here's a shot I took this morning before going into one of my fav. writing spots, the University of Oregon Art Museum's coffee shop, 'Marche.'

It still amazes me how quickly the original story took shape. I started the book on December 15, 2008 and the first draft was done on February 15, 2009. That's 115,000 words in two months, an insane rate of speed. It must have been channeled.

But, I've been rewriting and revising since then.

One of the reasons I rewrite so much is because the speed that the original story came to me made the writing more like a stream of consciousness. And, I don't know if any of you use this technique, but you may realize the conscious stream doesn't do English very well.

How did I get it done so fast? I follow the same routine every day; bike up to the University of Oregon Library at 7:15 am, get to work by 7:45, work continuously until 1 pm, come home, do the errands that can't be avoided, walk the dog and check all of the mail(s). Then, back to work until 6 pm.

Following that formula, plus the use of affirmations, I would consistently write 3 to 4,000 words per day, one day it went to 5,000. At that rate, the story takes shape as if it is being channeled. It is so complex, I think it was. I never could have put together a plot line like that one. More on that another day.

  1. Hi John - We met on the ferry to Salt Spring, had a great chat.

Congrats! You're up and running with this (I last checked in early Sept, didn't find anything listed yet). I've ordered a copy from Amazon.

I hope you'll answer the Salt Spring cycling survey I'm spearheading: http://www.ssi-bicycleworkinggroup.blogspot.com/. We're keen to know how your cycling experience went here, so we can figure out the best ways to improve it.

Thanks, and cheers for your launch - Brenda

  2. Hi John - I hope you're okay, that you're just not checking comments posted here.

If you are, then you might want to know my reaction to your story, especially since I teach karate (have a senior level black belt) and work as a writer and graphic artist who pulls together books.

If not, then I hope everything's going as well as you'd hoped. You've made quite a leap into the published storyspinners' world.

    B.
